Can’t Hear Zune Software Play
If you can’t hear your Zune software play, your best bet is probably to get the latest version of the Zune software by removing the version you currently have and re-installing the program’s latest version. Your problems should be solved by then. Here’s how to go about doing it.
To effectively re-install the Zune software while doing away with whatever issue was keeping it from playing properly, you need to use what’s referred to as the clean start procedure. When you use the clean start procedure to start a computer, Windows only starts basic devices and services when the computer starts. This way you’re able to perform a clean installation.
Step 1: Perform a clean startup

To perform a clean startup procedure, follow these steps.
Windows XP
| a. |
Click Start, click Run, type msconfig, and then click OK. |
| b. |
Click the General tab, and then click Selective Startup. |
| c. |
Under Selective Startup, clear the following check boxes:

Process WIN.INI File |
| • |
Load Startup Items |

| d. |
Click the Services tab, select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box, and then click Disable All. |

Click OK, and then click Restart. |
Windows Vista
| a. |
Click Start, type msconfig in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type the password or click Continue. |

Click the General tab, and then click Selective Startup. |
| c. |
Under Selective Startup, clear the Load Startup Items check box. |
| d. |
Click the Services tab, select the Hide all Microsoft services check box, and then click Disable All. |

Click OK, and then click Restart. |

To remove the Zune software from the computer, follow these steps.
Windows XP
| a. |
Make sure that the Zune device is not connected to the computer. |
| b. |
Click Start, click Run, type appwiz.cpl, and then click OK. |
| c. |
In the Add or Remove Programs window, click Zune, and then click Remove. |
| d. |
Click Yes to remove the Zune software. |
| e. |
If any of the following software appears in the Add or Remove Programs window, remove that software from the computer:

Microsoft User-Mode Driver Framework Feature Pack 1.0 |
| • |
Windows Driver Package – Microsoft WPD |
| • |
Windows Media Format 11 SDK |
| • |
Windows Portable Devices |
Note If you receive an error message that states that there are program dependencies that are blocking the removal of the software, do not remove that software. Microsoft User-Mode Driver Framework Feature Pack 1.0 and Windows Driver Package – Microsoft WPD are automatically installed when you run Zune Setup. If you must have the Windows Media Format 11 SDK installed, you can reinstall the software from the MSDN Windows Media Developer Center Web site after you install the Zune software. |
| f. |
On the computer, open the following folder:
c:\program files
Note If the programs list does not appear, click Show the contents of this folder. |

Locate and right-click the Zune folder, and then click Delete. |
Windows Vista
| a. |
Make sure that the Zune device is not connected to the computer. |
| b. |
Click Start, type appwiz.cpl in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER. |
| c. |
In the Uninstall or change a program window, click Zune, and then click Uninstall. |
| d. |
Click Yes to remove the Zune software. |
| e. |
If any of the following software is listed in the Uninstall or change a program window, remove that software from the computer:

Microsoft User-Mode Driver Framework Feature Pack 1.0 |
| • |
Windows Driver Package – Microsoft WPD |
| • |
Windows Media Format 11 SDK |
| • |
Windows Portable Devices |

On the computer, open the following folder:

Locate and right-click the Zune folder, and then click Delete. |

Step 2: Empty the Windows temporary folder
To empty the Windows temporary folder, follow these steps:

Click Start, click Run, type %temp%, and then click OK. |
| 2. |
Click Edit, and then click Select All. |
| 3. |
Click File, and then click Delete. You receive the following message:
Are you sure you want to send these items to the Recycle Bin?

Click Yes. |
Step 3: Reinstall the Zune software
To reinstall the Zune software, download and then install the current version of the Zune software. To do this, visit the following Zune Web site:
http://www.zune.net/setup
Note You must be logged on to your computer by using an account that has Administrator rights.
During the installation, the software will prompt you to reconnect your Zune device.
Step 4: Return to the typical startup procedure
After the installation of the Zune software is complete, reconfigure the computer so that it uses the typical startup procedure. To do this, follow these steps:

Click Start, click Run, type msconfig, and then click OK. |

On the General tab, click Normal Startup, and then click OK. |
| 3. |
Restart the computer. |
